There are quite a few lines that make up the volleyball court. The sooner you know what each one's purpose is the sooner you can move on to learning about other parts of the volleyball game. In this article, you'll learn more about the service line, the attack line, the ten foot and three meter line.
service line - The service line or the endline marks the farthest boundary line from the net in a volleyball court. It's parallel to the ten foot line and the center line and marks the closest spot that a player can be in order to serve the ball into the opposing team's court.
A service error is committed by a player if she or he steps on or over the service line while serving the ball at the beginning of any play.
attack line - There's an attack line on each side of the court and it's located three meters or approximately ten feet from the net on either side. The attack line exists in order to separate the front row players from the back row players and creates a point of reference in the volleyball rotation.
Front row hitters use the attack line to gauge how far back they need to be in order to begin their spike approach, while back row hitters know that they can only attack a ball that's been set to them, behind this attack line.
The attack line exists in the indoor volleyball court, but not for the beach or sand volleyball game.
ten foot line - This line serves the same purpose and is the same line when referring to the attack line and/or the three meter line. The name changes depending on who you play against and in what city, state or country you play the game. This is the line that's ten feet or three meters from the net, located on both courts it runs parallel to the net and it's purpose is to separate the front court and its players from the back court and the back row players.
In regards, to rules and regulations, if a libero sets the ball to a spiker or hitter on her team, she must stay behind the ten foot line in order to do it.
three meter line - The three meter line is the same as the attack line and the ten foot line. Three meters measures out to be ten feet so for those people who use the metric system they will call this line the three meter line instead of calling it the ten foot line.
