The better you get as a volleyball setter, the more you need to learn about setting a faster quicker offense. The volleyball terms below describe sets that the advanced setters use to outsmart the opposition.
Shoot set - The shoot set is a high velocity set that's delivered primarily to the middle blocker or left side hitter. This is a set that relies heavily on precise timing and precision placement. Whether the setter delivers the shoot set to the outside or half way out between zones 4 and 3 on the net, the hitter should have already taken their spike approach and have their arm up in the air ready to hit when the ball reaches them.
Half shoot - The half shoot is a very high speed or high velocity set, that's only one to three feet high and is delivered with virtually no arc and parallel to the net, to a hitter that takes off so they will make contact with the ball half way between zone four and zone three on the net.
At higher levels of competition the half shoot timing is such that the hitter has taken their last two approach steps and is in the air when the setter has the ball--in her hands--so all the setter has to do is literally shoot the ball at a very fast speed right into the hands of the waiting spiker. The half shoot basically looks like a long quick set that's being set about four or five feet away from the setter.
31 - The 31 is a fast half shoot the setter sets to a player that has taken their spike approach so they take off and land four to five feet in front of the setter.
32 - The 32 is a slower paced half shoot. The 32 is the set that can be compared to receiving a two-set four to five feet in front of the setter. The setter usually runs the 32 as the slower or second timing play option at the same time that she calls the 31. So the middle blocker would make her spike approach, take off about four to five feet away from the setter and be in the air by the time she is touching the ball. Meanwhile the outside hitter is taking her approach to a spot, just on the outside shoulder or depending on the team the inside shoulder of the middle blocker and as the middle is coming down from her approach the outside hitter is going up to hit the 32.
Three set - Just to make life complicated someone decided that the three set should exist. The three set is another name for the half shoot. Or vice versa, whatever came first the cart or the horse in this case the three set, the half shoot and the 31 or pretty much all the same and vary only with a player's spike approach speed, ability to get up and be up in the air (hang time) and the hitter's armswing speed.
Butter/nectar - "Butter" or "nectar" is slang used for when a setter has done their job and has delivered a beautiful well-placed set for a hitter to go up and just rip, especially if the set selection created a "one-on-one" or "no block" situation for a hitter, then the set that was delivered is described as a "nectar" set or "butter'. As in "that was a nectar set, please don't forget how you did that and can you do it again fifteen more times?'
Back in the day, we used to say "sweet" as in "that was such a sweet set" but now I'm dating myself, never mind.
